ROSSVILLE, GA (TCD) — A 24-year-old father will be sentenced to 30 years in prison for repeatedly hitting his two young children over two days in 2023, causing them 'horrible bruises' and other injuries.
On March 20, a Catoosa County jury found Dylan Tennant guilty of two counts of first-degree child abuse after a three-day trial, according to a statement released April 19 by the Lookout Mountain Judicial Circuit District Attorney's Office. The judge then sentenced Tennant to 30 years, the first half of which he will serve in the Georgia Department of Corrections. He was also ordered to have no contact with the victims and to have no unsupervised contact with minors.
According to prosecutors, Tennant and his two children – a 2-year-old son and a 3-year-old daughter – lived with the defendant's father, mother and older brother. Between March 14 and March 16, 2023, the children reportedly “made a mess of their bedroom” and Tennant repeatedly beat them over a two-day period. The district attorney's office alleged that Tennant also used a board to beat his son.
After the beating, Tennant reportedly ran away from home with her children and stayed with a friend to hide her injuries.
Tennant reportedly returned to her parents' home with her children a few days later. Her grandparents and her uncle discovered the victims' injuries and reported that Tennant had been abusing them, according to the district attorney's office.
In an interview, Tennant admitted to authorities that she knew her child's injuries were serious, but denied causing them. She reportedly lashed out at other family members, but she never sought treatment for her children.
According to the district attorney's office, witnesses from the Department of Family and Children's Services testified in court that “the bruising was the worst of their careers.”
Additionally, a forensic pediatrician with the Georgia Bureau of Investigation said during the trial that “the injuries were not accidental and were the result of repeated attacks using tremendous force.”
