What does World Obesity Day mean to you?
For me, World Obesity Day means we can all take a break together. My hope is that we can make a judgment call and find a solution.
How has this community helped you on your journey?
I need to be involved in a community that supports me when I fall and celebrates all my successes. We need community to combat loneliness. Because after all, if you live in North America, you know that loneliness is a huge health risk and the link between loneliness and obesity. When we can be part of a supportive community that sustains us, we have better opportunities at every level.
Obesity and Private Insurance

Why did you choose to discuss obesity and employer/private payer insurance?
Just a few years ago, healthy habits in the workplace were all the rage. Employers have embraced wellness accounts, offered gym memberships and encouraged employees to take the stairs instead of the elevator. Then it was about mental health. The company incorporates employee assistance programs to provide psychologists and similar types of support. Now everyone is interested in diversity and inclusion initiatives. People are looking at gender, race, sexual orientation, but for some reason size doesn't seem to sell. Perhaps there is a lack of diversity with one in four Canadians living with obesity?
