The decline of traditional metropolitan objective media outlets has had a dramatic impact on the news landscape. These media were freer and less objective than they appeared, and as online advertising soared, their advertising-dependent business models collapsed. This has led to partisan journalism targeting both the left and the right for political as well as business reasons. But while traditional media outlets like the New York Times have moved further left, they and other national media outlets have lost the trust of most Americans, who now place much more trust in their states and localities.
