Whoopi Goldberg, the Oscar-winning actress and co-host of “The View,” announced that she will be teaming up with Blkfam, a Black streaming service that aims to create free, kid-friendly content for Black audiences.
Goldberg's New Venture
Goldberg is an equity investor in Blkfam, which launched across multiple platforms yesterday.
“I have a 10-year-old great-granddaughter, and there’s not a lot of content created for her by people who look like her,” Goldberg, 68, told Variety. “I think we’re not always represented in the best way.”
Goldberg went on to say that before investing in Blkfam, “no one ever invited me to the ground floor. And this isn’t even the first floor, it’s the basement!”
“I love the idea of being a part of something that is going to grow,” she added. “As I get older, I think, ‘Wow, everything is going to outlive me,’” she said. This is one thing I hope lasts longer than me. I can be a black female Walt Disney!”

Blkfam founder says:
Founded by digital media veteran Larry Adams, who personally called Goldberg about the investment, Blkfam has “more than 20 syndicated series, over 1,000 hours of animated titles, dozens of animated characters of color and diverse gender experiences, and hundreds more syndicated series.” “It boasts a content library that includes hours of original music-based content.”
Blkfam also has 10 original live-action and animated series in development that are scheduled to debut on the streaming service throughout the year.
Adams explained that she was motivated to create Blkfam after exploring the Black programming section of the popular streaming service. He declined to give his name, and said he looked for content to watch with his children but found “tons of R-rated content.”
“Black culture and content is often stereotyped, isolated or ignored,” Adams said. “So I wanted to create a platform where my kids and I could have fun without having to face the same prejudices every day.” “By curating authentic content, backed by data and AI, primarily from Black storytellers, we have built a service that reflects the true inclusiveness and diversity that Black parents and children in particular can feel as a whole.”
Adams was particularly excited to collaborate with Goldberg, saying, “The magic of working with Whoopi Goldberg is that she has a magic bag full of ideas.”

Blkfam’s content partners and business model
Bkfam's content partners include Candle Media's ATTN and PlayWatch Kids.
“We are thrilled to partner with Blkfam,” PlayWatch owner Jimmy Jenkins said in a statement. “We feel this is a historic moment for families around the world.” “Ultimately, this platform will impact our children and our children’s children.”
Adams concluded that Blkfam's business model would involve financing original series through brand partnerships.
“We don’t do things like other streamers do where they get 10,000 hours of content,” he said. “Our carefully selected approach [the catalog] “It will be as deep and endless as Netflix, but there will be interesting faces we’ve never seen before.”
Goldberg regularly makes it all about race and enjoys using it to further divide our country each day on “The View.” So it's no surprise that she jumped into this racially motivated venture. However, it remains to be seen whether this will actually be as successful as she hopes, considering how many streaming services are out there these days.
