One of the questions we often hear from travelers is, “When is the best time to go on a cruise?” It’s hard to answer because there are so many possibilities! Do you prefer the high season in the Mediterranean, or do you prefer excursions or winter sailings there? Do you like cool climates or more tropical climates? Are you interested in a famous port or an off-the-beaten-path destination (or a combination of both)? In our new series, The Best Time to Go on a Cruise… We'll break down our favorite destinations for cruising and provide answers to help you prepare for your next great trip, no matter where you're traveling.
First, find out what each season means in the area you're considering. In the meantime, check out these helpful tips for identifying the best time to go on a cruise.
Choosing a cruise season isn't just about understanding when prices go up and down. It's also about experience. In French Polynesia, you can enjoy “beach season” whenever you sail. In the Mediterranean, beaches and water sports are limited to the summer months. Early spring cruises in Alaska in April and May may have more challenging weather than summer months (early fall can be phenomenal), but there are fewer crowds and more potential for surprises.
peak season

outline: High season is the best time to go on holiday. Typically, peak season coincides with school vacations and popular holidays, leading to a surge in demand. It is also a time when the weather and climate are generally as good as can be expected. In this case, the British Virgin Islands peak season for Caribbean cruises is the winter holidays until March. It is summer in the Mediterranean and Alaska.
profit: With clear skies and busy ports, peak season travel promises vibrant energy at the expense of crowds and high prices. This is a great time to enjoy a cruise as a family, as children are out of school during the holidays.
shoulder season

Vancouver's Butchart Gardens, here in the spring, is a great reason to try out an early Alaska cruise.
outline: What determines shoulder season? It curves and changes around the peak season, also known as peak season. That's because in places like Canada/New England, Northern Asia, the Mediterranean, and even Alaska, spring starts earlier than it used to (in April instead of May) and fall lasts more than a month longer than its usual end of August.
Pro: Vacationers can save money by traveling during the peak season, between peak and off-season. Shoulder season gives you the opportunity to experience places with fewer people and still nice weather.
low season

outline: Off-season cruises have some impact on year-round travel itineraries, such as those in French Polynesia and the Mediterranean. In both cases, the season is determined by the weather. A year-round tropical region, French Polynesia experiences a dry season from November to April. Warmer months can be wetter and stormier. But then the mountains are most beautiful. The Mediterranean is a different story. Winters are cool, so you'll want to dress in layers.
profit: There are definitely fewer crowds and you can get better deals on cruise fares, not to mention flights and pre- and post-cruise hotels.
Here's more information on how to choose the cruise that's best for you:
What do you think about crowds?
Understanding that peak season in a cruise area means more people, provides a lively atmosphere and generally occurs when travelers are more likely to fit a trip into their itineraries, this is an advantage. At the same time, if you prefer a more leisurely experience, consider trading your optimal weather for something a little more unpredictable but with fewer lines.
Plan your trip around special events and festivals
Timing your cruise to coincide with local festivals and events can add to the enjoyment of your voyage. From Carnival in Rio de Janeiro to Lantern Festivals in Taiwan and Christmas markets in Europe, participating in these celebrations provides a unique window into a culture's traditions and customs. Festivals bring vibrant colour, music and energy to destinations. It gives you the opportunity to interact with locals, watch traditional performances, and taste authentic cuisine not available during other periods.
Consider Budget-Friendly Seasons
Timing can affect the price of your cruise. During peak seasons, costs are often higher due to increased demand. If you're looking for an option, consider cruising during fresh season or off-season. Many cruise lines offer discounted rates during this time. Check out special promotions, early bird discounts and last minute deals. Subscribing to your cruise line's newsletter can help you find cost-effective options.
If you're planning a romantic getaway, take advantage of the school holidays
Families often time their cruises to coincide with school breaks, such as summer vacations or vacation breaks. Couples looking for a more romantic and quiet experience should consider off-peak hours. This period provides more opportunities for couples to enjoy quieter moments on board and explore the destination in a more serene environment.
