The most common cause of “weak ejaculation” is simply aging. But sometimes it can be a sign of a health problem. A weak ejaculation may mean that there is less ejaculate (semen) or a less powerful ejaculation.
When you ejaculate, semen is expelled from the body through the penis in two stages.
- Expulsion: Semen containing sperm collects in the urethral opening located at the base of the penis.
- Expulsion: The muscles surrounding the urethra contract to force semen out through the penis.
Problems at either stage can be problematic for men trying to have children.
Low dose (hypospermia)
When a man ejaculates, the average ejaculate volume is between 1/3 teaspoon and 1 teaspoon. If a man consistently produces low volumes, he is suffering from hypospermia, a condition called Perceived Ejaculate Volume Reduction (PEVR). The most common causes of low ejaculate volume are:
- Prostate Radiation for Cancer Treatment
- Drugs used to treat enlarged prostate, high blood pressure, and depression
- diabetes
- low testosterone
- frequent ejaculation
- smoking
PEVR is often associated with erectile dysfunction and other sexual problems.
weak orgasm
There is no standard way to measure ejaculatory power. The problem is often pointed out subjectively by the man or his partner. Weak orgasms may not be as satisfying as strong orgasms.
Weak orgasms can be caused by:
- weakened pelvic floor muscles
- low testosterone or other hormone deficiencies
- Retrograde ejaculation, a physical problem in which semen diverts from the urethra into the bladder
- Surgery or drugs used to treat enlarged prostate, prostate cancer, or testicular cancer
- Nerve damage from diabetes, Parkinson's disease, or multiple sclerosis
Treatment for weak ejaculation or low semen volume
Ejaculation problems can be resolved by identifying and treating the underlying condition. There are also drug therapies that your urologist may prescribe.
Over-the-counter supplements and herbal remedies claim to increase semen volume and make ejaculation stronger. There is no evidence to support these claims.
