A long-awaited forensic audit of the West Bonner School District found no issues of financial misconduct.
“We have not seen any patterns or activity that could indicate financial impropriety,” said Brandon Waldren, senior manager of fraud and forensics at Eide Bailly. He specializes in school district and higher education audits.
The district's previous board approved an audit in July 2023. For advice by former school leader Branden Durst. who resigned In September, the following notice was subsequently filed: suing two educational institutions For $1.25 million.
The forensic audit wreaked havoc on the school board. Some communities have accused the district of mishandling the money and called for an audit as a prerequisite to approving future bonds or ballot levies.
“I think everyone can take a deep breath. The forensic audit came back and I found 'there is no pattern of financial impropriety,' trustee Paul Turco said.
Turco's remarks drew loud applause at last week's board meeting.
Eide Bailly's analysis covered a five-year period from 1 July 2018 to 30 June 2023. They examined more than $21 million in financial records, including bank statements, credit card statements, general ledger accounts and expense documentation.
The board passed a motion to review the draft audit report and send questions to the board secretary by April 8. Eide Bailly will answer these questions before our next meeting. Approval of the draft report is scheduled to take place at the board of directors' regular meeting on April 17.
