The unexpected friendship between a poor fisherman and the majestic bird that first visited his rowboat 13 years ago has captivated Turkey for years.
The stork, nicknamed Yaren, or “companion” in Turkish, returned to Adem Yilmaz's boat every year after migrating south for the winter. Local news outlets gleefully chronicled his arrival last month.
Now, thanks to a 24-hour webcam installed by the local government, all stork lovers can check out Yaren and his partner Nazli (“coquette” in Turkish). They preen their hair, twist their necks, click their beaks, remodel their nests, and sometimes mate.
