United Airlines has postponed the launch of two international routes due to increased safety oversight from the FAA.
It was originally scheduled to launch between Newark, Portugal and Faro on May 24, and between Tokyo Narita and the Philippine beach destination Cebu on July 31.
The route to Faro, located in the Algarve region of southern Portugal, is currently suspended until the summer of 2025, and the detailed launch schedule has been changed to October 25.
United was scheduled to be the only airline flying between the U.S. and Faro this summer, and the only U.S. airline to serve Cebu.
Affected travelers can receive a refund or rebook for free through a United partner.
The FAA announced March 22 that it would increase oversight of United after a series of safety-related incidents last month. The agency said it would review United's business processes and manuals and send more officials to inspect the airline's facilities.
As part of this effort, the FAA also planned to pause some certification processes related to United.
In an email Tuesday, United confirmed that the Faro and Cebu schedule changes were a result of this pause.
