Jared Negrete was a 12-year-old boy who went missing while hiking with a group of Boy Scouts in the San Bernardino National Forest. He has been missing for over 30 years.
Jared Michael Negrete was born on September 11, 1978 in El Monte, California. At the time of his disappearance, he was in eighth grade and just two months shy of his 13th birthday.

On July 19, 1991, Jared went on a camping trip with a group of Boy Scouts to Mount San Gorgonio in the San Bernardino National Forest. The group consisted of a scout leader and six children, including Jared. The plan was to hike to the top of the mountain, then return to base camp and spend the night there.

As the group climbed the mountain, Jared somehow became separated from them. Another group of hikers claimed to have seen Jared taking zigzag shortcuts on the trail and advised them against it. A switchback is when a trail has a “zigzag” pattern that climbs up a steep incline. Shortcuts occur when hikers try to walk in a straight line along the trail instead of staying on the path. This can be dangerous for hikers because not only can it loosen the soil and destroy already established trails, but it can also lead hikers in the wrong direction.

When the second group reached the top, they let Jared's scout leader know that he was not in the group. Because the first group has already reached the top without Jared. Jared's scout leader said he would bring him back when the group came back down. He clearly told Jared to sit down and wait for the group because he was struggling to keep up.
When the group eventually returned to the bottom of the mountain, Jared was nowhere to be found. After a brief search, the scout leader took the rest of the group back to base and then hiked about five miles to find help. Around midnight, the group leader spotted park rangers who launched the largest search and rescue operation in the park's history. By then, temperatures had dropped into the low 50s, so park rangers quickly worked to find Jared.
Hundreds of search and rescue teams from nearby counties came together to search for Jared by land and air. On the third day of the search, footprints were found that matched the shoes Jared had been wearing that day. Searchers narrowed the search area to where the footprints were found, and discovered beef jerky and candy wrappers believed to have been left behind by Jared. They also found Jared's disposable camera and his backpack.
As searchers went through his belongings, they discovered the last photo Jared had taken of himself. The published photo shows a close-up of his face with only his eyes and nose exposed against a dark background. It is believed that Jared tried to use the camera's flash as a light as it started to get dark.

Despite a search and discovery of his belongings, Jared was nowhere to be found. The search continued for 19 days, but yielded no further results and was eventually concluded.

More than 30 years later, no other trace of Jared has been found. Jared is 5’2″ tall and weighs 150 lbs. On the day he went missing, he was wearing a traditional Boy Scout uniform, with green pants, a tan T-shirt and black high-top shoes. He also wore brown-rimmed glasses. If there's no sign of him at all, there are several possibilities as to what exactly happened to Jared. I hope something will be found in the future that will let Jared's family know what happened to him.
