As many as 80% of women face hormonal imbalance*. So it appears that women who are experiencing these challenges are not alone. The crazy thing is that even though many of us suffer from symptoms caused by hormonal imbalances, most of the time we are ignored by our doctors as if we are just women.
But I’m here to tell you that this is not normal! You deserve to feel good. That's why I'm sharing the six steps I took to balance my hormones.
*Before I get into the meat of it, I need to address the legal issues and I would like to remind you that I am not a trained medical professional, we are just friends and I am just sharing my experience. You should always seek advice from a medical professional.
my hormone journey
Irregular periods, painful menstrual cramps, excessive sweating, acne… All of this is what I experienced from the age of 14 to 35. No one ever said it was a sign of imbalance. In fact, every visit to the doctor reassured me that I was normal and healthy. So I never thought twice about it.
I got pregnant when I was 20 and had preeclampsia with each of my first three pregnancies, and my HELLP syndrome got worse when I gave birth to Ella. After Ella was born, the nurses and doctors warned us (me and Ella) that we were both lucky to be alive. They have never once discussed hormones.
Then, in my mid-30s, I suffered three consecutive miscarriages. I was completely heartbroken and looking for answers. But the gynecologist simply blamed my age and said the test results were… As you may have guessed, he said it was normal.
Then, at age 34, a routine blood test revealed that my cholesterol levels were very high. I met a doctor who wanted to put me on statins (for the rest of my life). I love modern medicine, but I only like to resort to medicine when there is no other solution.
I asked my doctor what my options were and if he would recommend a nutritionist. Surprisingly, he didn't even have anyone to recommend. So I left his office completely frustrated.
I called friends, searched the Internet, and read a few books. I learned that diet and exercise can absolutely help lower cholesterol levels. So I asked for recommendations for a good nutritionist and met Laura Farnsworth, MS, CNS, CN, LDN.
Laura agreed to meet with me (virtually) and we discussed my problem. We did more research and found out that not only did I have genetically high cholesterol, but my hormones were all out of whack as well.
But instead of medicine. Laura wanted me to switch to natural deodorant and eliminate toxic makeup, hair care, and skin care. She also instructed me to adjust my diet, add a few supplements, reduce stress, sleep better, and exercise a few times a week.

Now, five years later, I no longer have acne, I no longer sweat excessively, my periods have become very regular, and I have had the healthiest pregnancy and birth at age 39. I am now 42 years old and have never felt it. He even has abs – what do you think?
So here's the deal. The six steps I’m about to share aren’t surprising. These aren't things you've never heard of. But if you do them and do them routinely, they will change your life. At least they changed my life.

- mindful nutrition: Balancing the demands of motherhood and nourishing our bodies can be a delicate dance. While navigating busy schedules and picky eaters, It's important to prioritize nutrient-dense foods that support hormonal balance. Include plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables, lean proteins, healthy fats, and complex carbohydrates in your meals and snacks. Remember the power of meal prepping and batch cooking to efficiently tackle busy weeknights and ensure you always enjoy healthy meals. I love the Clean Simple Eats Meal Guides (buy here and get 10% off with code AMBERMAMIAN) and Lillie Eats & Tells Cookbooks for whole food, macro-balanced meals. Many of you know that my son Camden started Mamian Fitness, which specializes in helping women with hormonal issues. His Personalized macros and fitness plans are a complete game changer. For me! I no longer feel shame about eating. I eat more than ever and feel leaner and stronger than ever!
- stress management: Becoming a mom often comes with its share of stresses, whether it's managing tantrums, juggling schedules, or simply finding moments of peace amidst the chaos. But chronic stress can take a toll on your hormonal balance, affecting everything from your mood to your energy levels. Make self-care a non-negotiable part of your daily life. Schedule regular breaks, even if it's just a few minutes of deep breathing (I use the daily 10-minute meditation on the Calm app) or a brisk walk around the block. Consider enlisting the help of a loved one or hiring a babysitter for some much-needed time to recharge. remember, You can't pour water into an empty cup – Putting your well-being first is essential for the whole family.
- quality sleep: Ah, the difficult quest for a good night's sleep – a challenge familiar to many mothers. However, adequate sleep is very important for hormonal regulation and overall health. Hatch Restore 2 was the best investment I've ever made when it came to falling asleep. Sleep sounds can help you fall asleep and stay asleep. And the gentle sunrise alarm works with your natural circadian rhythm to help self-proclaimed night owls transform into early risers. I now wake up at 5am without a problem and cherish that quiet time to myself every morning. I've also learned to embrace the power of a 20-minute nap when I need it, and don't hesitate to ask for support from Mike or my teens to help me get the rest I need. Everyone knows that I feel better when I rest well.
- hub support: Nature has provided us with a treasure trove of herbal remedies to support our hormonal health. From balancing mood swings to relieving menstrual discomfort, certain herbs can be invaluable allies on your journey toward hormonal harmony. Explore options like maca root for energy and vitality, vitex (chaste tree berry) for menstrual support, psyllium husk to remove excess estrogen from the body, and ashwagandha for stress resilience. *As always, consult your healthcare professional before introducing any herbal supplements, especially if you are nursing or managing a medical condition. My nutritionist sees patients virtually and I highly recommend her.
- regular exercise: Finding time to exercise amid the pressures of motherhood may seem impossible, but it can make a big difference to our hormonal balance and overall well-being. Seize the opportunity to move This goes for before the kids wake up, during nap time, and even after you put them to sleep. To me, that looks like four days of strength training (Mamian Fitness can help him schedule his workouts like I do) and trying to average 8-10,000 steps each day.
Even in the beautiful chaos of motherhood, let's not forget to put our own happiness first and honor the amazing journey our bodies go through every day. By eliminating routine toxic products, embracing mindful nutrition, stress management techniques, quality sleep, herbal support and regular exercise, we can nurture our hormones and bring balance to our lives.
Remember, self-care isn't selfish. It is a powerful act of love that allows us to show our best selves to those we love. Here's how to embrace the journey of motherhood with grace, resilience, and hormonal harmony.
