Twenty-five academy trusts have been selected to run 30 new special free schools. But the process of finding trusts for the three schools will have to be redone.
Wellspring Academy Trust will run three schools in Birmingham, North East Lincolnshire and North Yorkshire.
Ethos Academy Trust, Ascendency Partnership Trust and MacIntyre Academies Trust operate two each (Check out the full list below).
But two areas, including two schools in Cheshire East and one on the Isle of Wight, are not on the Department for Education's list of successful applicants.
The DfE said it had been unable to appoint a trust to run these schools and therefore “will soon re-run the process to find a high-quality trust for these schools”.
They said they would “appoint only the strongest trusts to run the new free school” and the application demonstrates that their proposed school will deliver the best outcomes for the children attending.
Last year the DfE identified 33 areas that were successful in bidding for new special free schools. Since then, the organization has been applying to operate before entering the pre-opening phase. But special free schools can take years to open and some have suffered delays.
All but one of the council's areas are part of the government's high deficit intervention programme.
New schools amid capacity crisis
school week The investigation revealed a capacity crisis in special schools. Last week, the first government data on the matter showed that two-thirds were full or exceeded capacity.
Mark Wilson, CEO of Wellspring, said: “We are very pleased to receive this news. We look forward to communicating with stakeholders at the appropriate time.
“We have a very successful record of opening new schools and have a very capable team who can work constructively with the DfE and local partners.”
Susan Douglas, chief executive of Eden Academy Trust, which will run the special school in Hillingdon, said: “We know the life-changing impact a successful special school can have on pupils and their families and the DfE and local authorities want to do more. We need to expand places so students can be in the right environment.”
The DfE also announced today that 733 schools and sixth form colleges will benefit from £450 million of Condition Improvement Fund (CIF) funding.
It will also confirm the council's allocation of £850 million to create new places for young people with SEND. This is part of £2.6 billion to be invested between 2022 and 2025.
The DfE said there would be 60,000 new specialist jobs. Two-thirds of this will come from capital investment, and the free schools program will create more than 21,000 places.
A further 15 schools receiving £105 million were also announced in the spring budget.
Education Minister Gillian Keegan said: “Too often we hear from parents of children with special education needs who have to fight to get the right support.
“That is why this government has plans to provide 60,000 more places to meet the needs of these students and their families.
“We’re also continuing to invest in our school sites, so every child can be educated in the best classrooms for generations to come.”
