Tele2 and foodora's innovative drone delivery service
Telecommunications entity Tele2 and Q-Trade platform Foodora have unveiled a new service that delivers food using drones connected to IoT and 5G technology. According to a press release from Tele2, the venture aims to use cutting-edge technology to provide efficient food delivery directly to customers' properties or gardens.
Named foodora Air, the service involves a fleet of electric drones utilizing Tele2's 5G technology to deliver meals from a variety of restaurants located in Värmdö, near Stockholm. The drone, developed by technology company Aerit, integrates with foodora's technology platform to facilitate support for a streamlined delivery process.
Aerit's unique milk jug-shaped drone design is an advantage for this project. foodora Air can deliver within a range of 12 km and carry up to 4 kg. The drone is designed to be quiet and operate in a variety of weather conditions, including rain, wind, and snow.
Discussing the plan, Stefan Trampus, Vice President B2B at Tele2, noted that it introduces a new approach to delivery services. He noted that this partnership with foodora demonstrates how Tele2's 5G connectivity can be applied to delivery service innovation, making delivery services simpler and more sustainable while improving customer experience.
The environmental impact of drones is known to be less than traditional delivery methods, with drones having significant range and emitting less carbon dioxide per kilometer.
Trampus also spoke about the potential benefits of this technology for rural areas where urbanization trends have reduced access to services and products.
Scheduled to launch in Värmdö from May, the service plans to expand throughout Sweden, providing wider access to express delivery services that have typically been limited to city centres. Ordering is done through the foodora app.
Daniel Gustafsson Raba, operations director at foodora, acknowledged the adoption of drone delivery in Europe and emphasized the importance of ensuring access to fast delivery services in all regions.
Tele2 is tasked with providing continuous connectivity to drones through 5G IoT technology, which is essential for drone operations, which require fast response times and significant data transfer capabilities to safely manage deliveries.
