Washington (TCD) — A 16-year-old girl who stabbed her friend during an argument over McDonald's sweet and sour sauce last year was sentenced this week.
The judge ordered the unnamed teen to be detained at the Department of Youth Rehabilitation Services until she turns 21, the maximum sentence she could receive, WUSA-TV reported. She pleaded guilty last December to voluntary manslaughter while armed and carrying a dangerous weapon.
In the early morning of August 27, 2023, Metropolitan DC Police Department officers responded to a hospital in reference to a juvenile requiring treatment for stab wounds. The victim, Naima Rigon, 16, died from her injuries. That same day, investigators arrested an armed suspect on second-degree murder charges.
The suspect was reported to be in possession of a weapon at the time of his arrest.
According to WTOP-TV, the suspect, Ligon, and three others drove from Maryland to Washington, D.C., to attend the party. They then visited the McDonald's at 14th and U streets. The teens were in the car and got into a fight. The teenage suspect said Rigon and another passenger beat her, so she stabbed Rigon in self-defense.
WUSA reported that Ligon was stabbed in the chest and abdomen with a 7 1/2-inch knife.
The teen told police after the stabbing that “a fight broke out over sauce” and that “I asked for more sauce and she showed an attitude.”
The suspect reportedly texted a friend saying, “They shouldn't have jumped on me, IDGAF.”
Liggon's father, Wylace Liggon, reportedly said at the sentencing, “I believe some kind of justice has been served today, but I believe there is no justice at all because we don't have her yet.”
The teenage suspect also said, “If I could go back to that day, I would change everything.”
