There is no reason for the Supreme Court to hear Trump's immunity claim, but four supposedly conservative justices decided to ignite the court's remaining credibility by agreeing to hear the case.
Judge Luttig responded to the Supreme Court's decision to hear the case:
Look, just hearing this case, this is a big decision. There was no reason in the world for the Supreme Court to take up this case. A three-judge panel of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit wrote a brilliant opinion denying the claim that the president claims absolute immunity under the U.S. Constitution and laws. The president is immune from prosecution for crimes committed while in office.
Of course, at a more practical level, there are courts. The Supreme Court could decide this very quickly, in time for the former president to be tried before the election. But today's decision makes that much less likely.

Andrew Weissmann tweeted that the decision effectively exempts Trump.
SCOTUS will stay D.C. case and quickly hear Trump appeal of immunity. But each day of delay acts to give Trump virtual immunity. https://t.co/y3sAI8xJ7p

There are no unresolved legal issues in this case. Every court at every level has ruled against Trump's claims to absolute immunity every time his lawyers have made such claims. The only good news is that the Supreme Court will hear the case on April 22nd. The bad news is that there is no guarantee that they will issue a speedy ruling.
If you take this case and there are no open legal issues, it is an act of corruption.
The Supreme Court's conservative majority has once again proven itself illegitimate, which is why the court needs oversight and reform.
