The explosion was the explosion of a massive star, a so-called blue supergiant, with a mass 20 times the mass of our sun. Its life ended in dramatic style in what astronomers call a supernova, commonly referred to as SN 1987A. It was the first supernova visible to the naked eye in 400 years, and it came from a star whose details were captured and recorded by astronomers before it exploded.
