I have become almost numb to the flood of notifications that bombard my phone every day. But if an app sends a simple, very human “Hello!” message, surely that's enough to stop me in my tracks. And Starbucks sent out a push notification a few minutes ago telling god exactly how many devices there are. For what purpose? Who knows?
Just hello. There is no other context. Random greetings on a boring, rainy Tuesday (here in New York). So I knocked. Doing so took me to the Starbucks app without any specific destination or explicit promotion attached to the prompt.
The Verge We reached out to Starbucks to learn more about this important news. I'm not one to be rude, so whoever you are, goodbye.
But for now, let's turn off notifications for the app. Because this is a perfect example of how loosely privileged is used.
