Coonie Koontz Sophia Renkin Sharon David Gerald David The Nevada serial killings were committed by Wilbur Ernesto Martinez-Guzman, 23, between January 9, 2019 and January 16, 2019. Connie Koontz, Sophia Renken, Gerald “Jerry” David, and Sharon “Sherry” David were all killed by firearms over a nine-day period in Washoe and Douglas counties, Nevada. What led to the Nevada serial killings On January 3, 2019, Jerry and Sherry David reported a robbery at their residence at 760 La Guardia Lane, Reno, NV. In a police report, David said missing items included a specialty saw, several fishing rods and a hunting bag containing a handgun and ammunition. Connie Koontz Murder Sometime during the night of January 9–10, 2019, 56-year-old Connie Koontz was murdered in her home at 1439 James Road, Gardnerville, NV. The assailant broke into her home and fled on foot. Items stolen included an iMac all-in-one desktop computer, an iPhone, an Apple Watch and several items of jewelry. According to the medical examiner, Koontz's cause of death was a single shot from a .22 caliber gun to the head while she was sleeping. There was no evidence that she forced her way into the home. Authorities determined her death occurred sometime between 4:00 PM on January 12, 2019, and 1:00 PM on January 13, 2019. Investigators described unusual elements at the scene. The front door of her house, where she lived, was “at an angle,” and the dog door at the back of her house was open. Detectives and forensic technicians discovered numerous pieces of evidence within the residence that provide a clear picture of the sequence of events. Investigators found .22 caliber ammunition partially in the pantry door jamb. They assumed Sophia had been startled when she was shot while running away. They found Renken on the floor of the master bedroom. She was shot four times, including once in her face. The medical examiner determined her death was the result of a .22-caliber gunshot wound to her head. Sophia Renken Murders of Jerry and Sherry David Reno Rodeo Association members Jerry and Sherry David, 81 and 80, were murdered in their home at 460 La Guardia Lane, Reno, NV. Investigators found Sherry David near the back door of the home, near the mudroom entrance. She had previously been shot in the head with a .22 caliber firearm. Jerry David was found in the master bedroom. He seemed to be changing his clothes. He was also shot once in the head with a .22 caliber firearm. The condition of the residence indicates that a very thorough burglary occurred, including the loss of jewelry, two empty gun cases, and several empty cabinets and drawers throughout the home. Jerry and Sherry David had been married 52 years at the time of the murders. Gerald “Jerry” and Sharon “Sherry” David The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office’s Nevada Serial Killer Investigation Team obtained a search warrant from Apple Corporation for any movement related to Apple products stolen from Sophia Renken. Apple Corporation returned information about an attempt to link Renken's Apple Watch to an Apple account that did not belong to her, to an address in Carson City, Nevada, that was not associated with Renken. The address in question, 2890 Menlo Drive – Apartment 11, Carson City, NV, was owned by Sophia Guzman. Investigators discovered that Guzman had a 23-year-old son named Wilbur Martinez-Guzman. During the initial investigation, detectives learned that Wilbur Martinez-Guzman had visited a local pawn shop in Carson City. Each pawn shop's property was linked to an individual victim, and all pawn shop merchandise was linked to Martinez-Guzman. Detectives arrested Martinez-Guzman on Jan. 19, 2019, on charges of possession of stolen property and theft. Wilbur Ernesto Martinez-Guzman In a police interview, Martinez-Guzman admitted to various robberies, including the robbery of David's home, beginning in January 2019. As interrogation progressed, he made a full confession. Wilbur Martinez-Guzman's Confession Wilbur Martinez-Guzman told detectives that he robbed David's house earlier this month, where he obtained a .22-caliber handgun. He said he used a handgun while robbing Connie Koontz. According to his statement, he entered her Kuntz home through her unlocked back door with the intent to rob her. When she came out of her bedroom, he shot her once and robbed her of her jewelry and Apple products. A few days after Koontz's murder, he entered Sophia Renken's home with the intention of robbing her. Martinez-Guzman explained that when Renken entered the home, he left the bedroom and went into the kitchen, where she was startled. He said he shot her four times but left her house without stealing anything because he was “scared.” A few days after Renken was murdered, Martinez-Guzman went to David's house around 6 a.m. He explained that he worked for the landscaping crew that did the work on the property, so he was familiar with the property and the family. Martinez-Guzman said he was entering the back door of the residence when he encountered Mrs. David. He shot her once before moving further into her home where he met Mr David. He shot David while he was sitting on the bed while he was getting dressed. After the couple died, Martinez-Guzman said he stole everything he thought he could use. He admitted emptying his gun cabinet, wrapping weapons and various other items in a tarp and placing them in a hole dug in the ground on his property. Detectives found the hole as he described it. Of the items from Koontz and David's, Martinez-Guzman received $179 from the pawnbroker. Official Charges against Wilbur Martinez-Guzman Prosecutors from Washoe County and Douglas County, NV, worked together to file charges against Wilbur Martinez-Guzman as he went on a six-day killing spree between the two counties. In total, Martinez-Guzman is charged with four counts of murder with a deadly weapon. four counts of theft while in possession of a firearm; And there was one robbery. Martinez-Guzman was initially held in the Carson City Jail on $500,000 bail and then transported to Reno, Nevada, to face trial.
