KARACHI: The Sindh government has requested assistance from the Asian Development Bank (ADB) to build 250,000 houses to help flood victims.
These developments were made today during a meeting between the ADB delegation led by Lee Hong-soo and Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah.
At the meeting, the ADB delegation discussed with the Sindh CM the construction of an additional 250,000 houses for flood-affected people and agreed to negotiate terms and conditions for the $400 million project.
Sindh Chief Secretary Fakhre Alam, Secretary to CM Raheem Shaikh, P&D Board Chairman Shakil Mangnejo, Finance Secretary Kazim Jatoi and CEO SPHF Khalid Shaikh were also present in the meeting.
The ADB delegation included Water Resources and Emergency Support Director Mian Shaukat, Economist Jules Hugot, and Project Analyst Rabia.
The Prime Minister said he was seeking funding to build 250,000 homes for those affected by the floods.
He added that $400 million is needed for the project, with another $100 million needed to develop community infrastructure.
CM Shah said he wanted to construct an external sewerage system with soaking pits, septic tanks, drinking water facilities and drainage system.
“We also plan to provide solar units and toilets in houses being built for flood-affected houses,” he said.
SPHF CEO Khalid Shaikh said 100,000 homes had been built and work was underway on others.
“We are also looking for donors to build houses separate from those affected by the floods.”
The meeting decided that the paperwork for the $400 million project comprising 250,000 homes will be completed and submitted to the ADB board meeting.
