The controversial move follows declining attendance and an increase in homeschooling since the pandemic.
School absence fines currently start at £60, rising to £120 if payment is not made within 21 days. But the DfE said fines will now start at £80 and rise to £160.
Data showed that almost 90% of fines were for unauthorized holidays, often booked outside the school term for financial reasons.
Education Secretary Gillian Keegan has stressed the importance of attendance, but critics argue fines may not be the most effective tool. They call for targeted resources to address the root causes of poor attendance, including support for the mental health of vulnerable families and children.
I'd like to know whether you think these harsher penalties will solve the widespread problem of truancy, or whether you think they will only punish parents who are already doing their best to send their children to school.
