Kamala HampanaThe renowned Kannada female writer passed away on June 21, 2024, due to a heart attack in Bengaluru. She was 88 years old.
Kamala Hampana was not only a writer, but also a scholar, teacher, researcher, and literary critic. She was born on October 28, 1935 at Devanahalli in rural Bengaluru. During her career spanning over 60 years, she has written and published over 60 books in various genres in Kannada.Apart from this, she has written two books in English. She has written and published nine articles talking about her own research.
Considering her illustrious career, she received the prestigious Dana Chintamani Attimabbe award from the government. She has also been bestowed with notable awards for her prodigious works in the field of art and literature, including Sahitya Akademi Award, Rajyotsava Prashasti, Kittur Rani Chennamma Award, Baba Amte Award and Nadoja Award. In 2003, she was also the President of the 71st Akhila Bharata Kannada Sahitya Sammelana held at Moodabidri.
In response to the news of her death, many political leaders expressed their respect and condolences on social media.

Dr. Kamala was popular not only for his literary works, but also for his research and teaching. She wished her a lifetime of happiness. I share your sorrow. of Dr. Hampa Nagarajaiah and his family.”
In accordance with Kamala Hampana's wishes, her body will be donated to Ramaiah Medical College. She is survived by her husband, author and scholar Professor Hampa Nagarajaiah, two daughters and one son.

Kamala Hampana published 60 books during her lifetime and wrote novels and poetry. Her prominent works include her autobiography, four collections of stories, and three radio plays. She also wrote two books in English, ‘Attimabbe and Chalukyas’ and ‘Jainism and Other Essays’.
Ms Hampana was also an editor and translator. She has translated works such as ‘The Extinction of Classes’ by Dr. BR Ambedkar. Throughout her life she identified with and worked with many women's and Dalit movements.
She has worked extensively as a researcher, especially in the field of Jaina literature. Her main areas of focus include: kannada literature and Jainology (the study of Jainism).
