WEST CALNE TOWNSHIP, PA (TCD) — A 52-year-old father and his 45-year-old girlfriend are accused of forcing a young girl to do extreme exercise and withholding food before she died.
According to the Chester County District Attorney's Office, just before 7:30 p.m. on May 4, West Calne Township police and Westwood Fire Company ambulances responded to a home on Reid Road after Rendell Hoagland told his 12-year-old daughter the following: We have dispatched. Malinda Hoagland was unresponsive. Her officials transported her child to the Paoli Hospital Trauma Center, where her medical staff determined there was “something seriously wrong” with her child.
Malinda Hoagland weighed only 50 pounds, had bruises all over her body, had several broken bones and suffered organ failure, according to prosecutors. She died just before 10 p.m. that night.
According to the District Attorney's Office, Malinda Hoagland dropped out of public school in late November and early December 2023 and switched to “home cyber school.”
Investigators obtained cellphone evidence from Rendell Hoagland and his girlfriend, Cindy Warren, and determined that Warren had deleted many text messages she had sent with her boyfriend. Officials also reportedly found video on the couple's home camera system showing Malinda Hoagland's ankles handcuffed to a piece of furniture.
According to prosecutors, Rendell Hoagland and Warren punished the young girl by verbally abusing her and requiring her to do strenuous physical exercises such as squats. The couple also allegedly made Malinda Hoagland jump in place “while she was still shackled.”
The district attorney's office alleged that Warren and Rendell Hoagland withheld meals from the victim as punishment. Prosecutors said the video of the alleged abuse goes back several months.
Warren's 9-year-old son was home at the time but was unharmed, according to WCAU-TV.
Hoagland and Rendell Warren were arrested May 6 on charges of attempted murder, aggravated assault, kidnapping and other related crimes. The judge set bail at $1 million. Additional charges, including murder, are possible as investigators gather more evidence.
Chester County District Attorney Christopher de Barrena-Sarobe said: “Malinda suffered evil and suffering that no child should have to experience. I thank all the first responders and law enforcement officers who worked tirelessly on this case. We are in this together. Please bring justice for Malinda. “
