CINCINNATI (TCN) — A 53-year-old man faces at least seven years in prison for causing his diabetic young daughter's death by giving her Mountain Dew.
WXIX-TV reports A judge sentenced Christopher Hoeb to 7.5 to 10.5 years in prison after pleading guilty in April to involuntary manslaughter of his 4-year-old daughter. As a result, prosecutors dropped the murder charge and two counts of child endangerment against him.
The child's mother, Tamara Banks, also plead guilty He was charged with involuntary manslaughter and sentenced to 9 to 13.5 years in prison in May. The bank faced the same charges as Hoeb.
The girl was reportedly found unconscious at Banks and Hoeb's home on January 21, 2022. She was taken to Cincinnati Children's Hospital, where her doctors determined she was brain dead. She died two days after she was taken off life support.
According to WKRC-TV, After the indictment, Clermont County Prosecutor Clay Tharp said the victim, identified as Karmity Hoeb, was addicted to methadone at birth. She reportedly has not seen another doctor since weaning her baby.
Tharp said the girl's “overall care was so poor that it led to her death.”
According to Tharp, Karmity suffered from “baby bottle caries,” a cavity caused by drinking liquids high in sugar. “It turns out this 4-year-old was drinking Mountain Dew from a bottle every day. He was drinking so much that his teeth were rotting,” he said.
WKRC Report Karmity's cause of death was listed as diabetic ketoacidosis.
According to WXIX, Hoep apologized at the sentencing hearing, saying, “A lot of carelessness and laziness led to this. It should never have happened. I am very sorry about this.”
