Far-left anti-Israel student groups last week offered newly admitted students at Northwestern University a “different dining experience” while protesting the “colonization” and “genocide” of Palestine.
Daily Northwestern Activists from Students for Justice in Palestine, Educators for Justice in Palestine, and Jewish Voice for Peace sent leaflets to new students accusing the university of “exploitation.” It is reported that it was distributed to .[ing] workers, abuse[ing] environment,” “is implicated in Israel’s occupation of the West Bank and continued presence in the Gaza Strip.”
Activists who marched on campus called for a ceasefire in the Israel-Hamas war, divestment from fossil fuel companies, and more. [NU founder] John Evans’ Campus Colonial Legacy” (see here for background).
Ahmad Hamadeh, a parent of an accepted student, said he was 'proud' to see the protesters highlighting the inhumane acts taking place in Gaza and Lebanon. Student Jordan Muhammad, an SJP member who uses “ki/kis pronouns,” said that in addition to protests and rallies, student groups should recruit “researchers and graphic designers.”
Activists also protested Hillel at Northwestern, with one activist claiming the Jewish organization was “one of the many ways this university is complicit in inculcating Jewishness and Zionism.”
Northwestern Dean of Students/Vice President for Wellness Mona Dugo attended the rally. (picture) He has a background in psychology and social work, “with a particular focus on holistic well-being.” Dugo said his presence was aimed at “ensuring students’ ‘right to protest’ and ‘protecting their right to freedom of expression.’”

Northwestern spokeswoman Eliza Larson told the student newspaper that the NU community “fully supports the community's right to peaceful protest.”

“Admission Day is a very curated experience for students, and it leaves us with no idea what’s going on,” said SESP sophomore Anusha Kumar, Fossil Free NU and SOLR. [Students Organizing for Labor Rights] member. “It was a really great opportunity to collaborate and show solidarity with organizations with similar values.” …
“We’ve tried to show Northwestern everything it doesn’t say, and key to that is how Northwestern treats its employees.” [SOLR member Julián] Pepper said. “We are honored to stand here with all of you to demand that Northwestern treat its workers and all members of our community humanely.”
Organizers said they began planning protests this weekend. […] Selina Liu, a sophomore in communications, said the high turnout demonstrated the issues the organization has come together to reach beyond NU and other institutions. …
Hillel University President Michael Simon said students were experiencing “a lot of concern and distress related to the war,” noting that the situation had recently escalated due to Iranian drone and missile strikes on Israel on Sunday.
“Spaces like Hillel allow for real, thoughtful and nuanced conversations about the most difficult issues we face,” Simon said. “I hope that anyone who comes to Northwestern comes with an open mind and an open mind that can communicate across differences beyond the rhetoric on the flyer.”
Dean Dugo's social media stories claim the man's poor response to the coronavirus pandemic was because he was “too full of himself” and a warning about Michael Bloomberg's 2020 presidential bid (“Trump could be anti-democratic”) ” contains a link to: [but] “Bloomberg is post-democratic”). There's also a photo from 2019 of her holding a sign that says “IMPEACH THE MOTHERF*CKER!”
