press release
The Aviation Museum in Warner Robins, Georgia, will host an event commemorating the Greenland expedition. This event is part of the Heritage Series and features individuals who were part of the original expedition team.
On July 15, 1942, bad weather and limited visibility forced six P-38 fighters and two B-17 bombers to return to Greenland en route to the British Isles during Operation Bolero by U.S. forces in England. The aircraft made an emergency landing on an ice floe and rescued all crew members, but the plane had to be abandoned. The P-38 Glacier Girl, five other fighter planes, the P-38 Glacier Girl, and two B-17s were left on the ice floe, buried under 268 feet of snow and ice that had slowly accumulated over decades.
Fifty years later, in 1992, members of the Greenland Exploration Association brought Glacier Girl back to the ground after years of exploration and excavation. This event will be held on February 4, 2024 from 2 PM to 4 PM at the Century of Flight Hangar located in Building 2. This event is free for the general public, and visitors attending the event in person are also welcome. However, visitors can reserve seats here. Visitors to the event will have the opportunity to meet members of the Greenland Expedition team and hear first-hand stories about their experiences during the expedition. A question and answer period follows. Admission to the museum is open to the public before and after the event. The Aviation Museum is located at 1942 Heritage Blvd, Robins AFB, GA 31098..
