Cleveland (TCD) — A 32-year-old mother who died last year while leaving her child alone at home while on vacation will spend the rest of her life in prison.
Kristel Candelario was sentenced to life in prison without parole for the June 2023 aggravated murder of her 16-month-old daughter, Jailyn Candelario, Cuyahoga County Prosecutor Michael O'Malley said in March. Announced on the 18th. Candelario pleaded guilty in February to one count of aggravated murder and one count of child endangerment.
On June 6, 2023, Candelario traveled to Detroit and Puerto Rico from June 6 to June 16, leaving his daughter alone at home near Lorain Avenue and West 97th Street. When she returned, Candelario reportedly found her child unresponsive inside her Pack-N-Play pen. She called the Cleveland Police Department, who later responded and the Cleveland Fire Department pronounced the victim dead at the scene.
Police found that the Pack-N-Play's liner was “soiled with urine and feces, along with soiled blankets.” Prosecutors said the child was “severely dehydrated” at the time of his death.
“Today we remember our beautiful daughter, Jaylin, who was taken from this world by her mother’s unimaginable selfishness, who thought she would go on vacation for 10 days and leave her to starve,” O’Malley said in a statement. . Her Pack-N-Play takes her parental care to a new level.”
Cleveland Police Chief Dorothy Todd added, “Every homicide that occurs in our city is significant, but when children are involved, it is even more devastating.”
