A mother expressed her regrets about giving her newborn an ‘adult name’.
In a video shared on TikTok in March, parent Heather discussed “name regret” before noting that she welcomed her son a few months ago. She then explained that after giving birth to her baby, she had mixed feelings about the name she chose.
“I like his name, but I’m not sure I like his name,” she said. “I called him his adult name. I named him Reed. And I don't know if you don't like the name for whatever reason. Or maybe he's having a hard time connecting with that person because he's a bit of a squeaky baby.”
She then asked fellow parents, especially those who gave their babies what they considered “adult” names, such as George, Harrison, Theodore or Thomas, if they could relate to her feelings. She also said that she does not often refer to her own child by his name.
“Have you had the same problem? Or maybe he doesn't like the name I give my child? Did it take some time?” She said. “I mean, right now, we call him baby and we call him our little friend. I can’t call him Reed.”
She noted that while she told her husband, Scott, that she didn't like their baby's name, she admitted that “deep down, I still like the name Reed.”
In the comments of the video, which had over 20,000 views, several people praised Heather's choice of baby name. They also shared meaningful experiences they had when naming their own children.
“I think it’s because Reed doesn’t provide age-appropriate nicknames for the stage he’s in. Great name,” one person wrote.
“I named my son Reid and I love that name! Now he's a young adult, but when he was a naughty baby we gave him nicknames… Sometimes we called him Reido. Sometimes we called him Reidie,” another added.
“It’s not a boy, but 15-month-old Jane is Jane. She said that name was very special to me but she was weird when she was little. We called her baby Jane a lot and she was the perfect name,” a third person added.
speaking people, Heather explained that when she first brought the baby home, she “started to wonder” if Reed was the right name for him. She said, “I knew I liked the name, but I was having a hard time associating it with such a tiny human!” She said.
She also shared how relieved she was, admitting that her husband believes the name suits their child well.
“He was 100% sure about the name from the day we chose it!” She said. “It was actually his name suggestion and he compared all the other options to it.”
However, Heather made it clear that she would not consider changing her baby's name. She also pointed out another reason you might feel connected to your child's name.
“The name has a sentimental meaning and cannot be legally changed. “He is my first son after having three daughters, so I wonder if I am still in shock from having a son,” she said.

Over the years, some celebrities have been candid about regretting the name they gave their babies. In 2022, reality star Kylie Jenner revealed for the first time that when she and her now ex-boyfriend Travis Scott welcomed her son, she was naming him Wolf. Yes. However, she later said she would change the baby's name because Wolf “didn't really feel like it was him.” In January 2023, she officially revealed that her son's new name is Aire Wolf Webster.
being interviewed WSJ Magazine Later that year, Jenner reflected on her decision to change her baby's name, saying it was “the hardest thing I've ever done.” [she’s] I’ve never done that before in my life.”
“I still think, ‘Did I make the right decision?’” she said. “I couldn’t make decisions or think straight because of the postpartum stress and hormones. And it destroyed me. I couldn't name the guy. And I was like, ‘I feel like I failed. 'My son has no name.' So it took some time. And the longer I waited, the more difficult it was to name him.”
