Rep. Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) said his goal is to fight his party's “isolationist movement” and warned he has no plans to leave the Senate after stepping down as Republican leader.
McConnell refuses to withdraw from Senate
McConnell, 82, told WHAS he will resign from his leadership position at the end of this year, but will not serve the remainder of his Senate term until 2026.
“I am particularly involved in the real fight against the isolationist movement in our party. And some others as well. And its symbol these days is: Shall we help Ukraine or not?” According to Politico, McConnell said: “I have this kind of work in mind as a focus for the next few years.”
McConnell made similar comments in another interview this week.
“I will not leave the Senate. And I am particularly involved in the fight against the isolationist movement,” McConnell said, according to The New York Post. “This is what we will be focusing on for the next few years.”
McConnell added that Americans are living through the most dangerous time for the free world since the 2000s. [before] “The Berlin Wall fell.”
“When you have a Democrat in the White House, our party tends to be isolationist,” McConnell explained. “Most Republicans voted against Lend-Lease’s entry into World War II, and Pearl Harbor put that right.”

McConnell disagrees with Rand Paul.
Asked how his views on foreign aid differ from those of fellow Kentucky Republican Rand Paul, who has been outspoken in his view that the U.S. should not send more money to Ukraine, McConnell responded, “Paul is the first “I will be the one to speak,” he replied. “He is an isolationist,” he said, adding that the two men have never agreed on foreign policy.
McConnell went on to say it was disturbing that more and more Senate Republicans were agreeing with Paul's views and opposing voting to send more money to Ukraine.
“What is more troubling is that we are moving in that direction, making claims that others can easily refute. We will not lose any of our troops. It’s the Ukrainians who are fighting,” McConnell lamented. “If Russia takes over Ukraine, some NATO country will be next, and then we will be in the middle of it.”

McConnell refuses to discuss Trump
Former President Donald Trump also made it clear that he was not in favor of sending more aid to Ukraine. McConnell expressed unenthusiastic support for Trump last month but appears to have tried to avoid speaking publicly about the former president in recent days.
“I’m doing everything with the Senate,” McConnell said when asked if he had recently spoken with President Trump. “Biden has problems too. Neither of these candidates scored well with the public. One of them will win. What will I do? “I will focus on handing over my position to the next majority leader,” he said.
McConnell also said his top priority is ensuring Republicans flip the Senate this November.
He concluded, “I hope that the person who succeeds me will be majority leader.”
It's unfortunate that McConnell isn't even trying to hide the fact that he's America Last at this point, and he's determined to end his term in office. In the end, I hope he reconsiders his decision and retires mercifully, because he is the last Republican the right needs in the Senate at this critical time.
