Keau, Hawaii (TCD) — A murder-suicide investigation is underway after police found the boyfriend of a missing woman died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Matthew Poole reported his girlfriend, 38-year-old Ashley Kuregian, missing to the Hawaii Island Police Department on May 21 after she had not been seen for a week. Officials responded to a home two days later and announced their presence.
Police heard a loud “pop” sound similar to a gunshot from inside. The department's Special Response Team and Crisis Negotiation Team also responded to the home “because they believed there may be an armed barricaded subject,” according to officers.
Police entered the scene and found Poole dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound and found a firearm nearby. An autopsy confirmed that he died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head.
While searching the home, police discovered information that led them to search the Orchidland Estates Subdivision for Kuregian's remains. On the evening of May 23, detectives found the body, later identified as Kuregian, in an “advanced stage of decomposition” in an undeveloped vacant lot. Her autopsy revealed that she died from a gunshot wound to her head.
