STERLING HEIGHTS, MI (TCD) — A 31-year-old man was charged with stabbing his pregnant girlfriend last weekend, causing the death of the victim's fetus.
According to the Macomb County Prosecutor's Office, Damarion Goler allegedly stabbed 31-year-old Talic Mersina near the door of her Sterling Heights home on Sunday, March 24. Police responded to the home around 3 a.m. and observed blood traces, but no one was there at the time, WJBK-TV reported.
Shortly thereafter, Clinton Township police received a call about a man covered in blood about 10 miles away, according to WJBK. Police later found Gawler and Mercina in the victim's vehicle in the parking lot outside the defendant's mother's home.
Talik was taken to the hospital but died from stab wounds. The victim's fetus also died.
Prosecutors charged Gawler with second-degree murder and assault on a pregnant person. A miscarriage was intentionally caused. He was also accused of tampering with evidence and concealing the death of an individual. If convicted of second-degree murder or assault, he could face up to life in prison.
Gawler appeared in court for arraignment on Wednesday, March 27, and was reportedly being held in the Macomb County Jail without bail. He is scheduled to appear in court again on April 3.
Macomb County Prosecutor Peter Lucido said: “The defendant chose to take the life of his pregnant girlfriend, who trusted and loved him. Justice requires that he face the consequences of his crimes. These actions were not simply crimes against individuals, but crimes against businesses. It is the very structure of humanity itself.”
