The roof of a church collapsed in northern Mexico on Sunday, killing at least 11 people and seriously injuring two others, officials said.
Preliminary reports indicate that about 100 people were inside the building in Ciudad Madero at the time of the incident, according to a statement from the Tamaulipas state security agency. Reuters reported that 30 people were believed to be buried under the rubble.
A Tamaulipas security spokesman said at least 60 people were injured, two seriously.
Units from the National Guard, National Guard, Civil Protection and Red Cross were supporting the rescue operation.
Bishop Jose Armando Alvarez of the Diocese of Tampico said the church roof collapsed while worshipers were taking communion. He urged other members of the community to pray for the survivors.
“At this moment, the necessary work is being done to pull people out from under the rubble,” Bishop Armando said in a recorded message shared on social media, according to Reuters.
