If you've planned a trip to Bacalar and done your research ahead of time on what to do, you've almost certainly come across the famous Bacalar Lagoon (also known as the Seven Colors Lagoon), known for its vibrant waters. But have you heard of Los Rapidos Bacalar?
You may not be familiar with certain parts of the lagoon. Most of Laguna Bacalar is a wide lake, but at Los Rapidos it narrows and shallow crystalline channels lead to unique stromatolites.
Stromatolites are formed by layers of sediment in water, forming a unique rock formation. These stromatolites are not just dead rocks. They act as water filters and are an important part of the lagoon ecosystem. Look for signs indicating areas where walking or standing is not permitted.
The waterway leads directly into the main lagoon and the rapids aren't really that fast. Instead, it's like an actual lazy river you see at a water park.
Los Rapidos Information
Los Rapidos is a naturally occurring narrow point in a lake system where ocean currents flow between bodies of water.
For a small entrance fee, you can enjoy Los Rapidos by visiting the exclusive “Beach Club”. This is really the only way to see the lagoon's unique features.
Los Rapidos is about half a mile from the main entrance office. You can float or swim, but be aware that currents move relatively quickly so floating in place is not always possible. You will need to swim or paddle against the tide to get back to the entry area.
Los Lapidos Bacalar time
Los Rapidos is open every day of the week from 10am to 6pm.
Los Rapidos entrance fee
The entrance fee to Los Rapidos is 150 pesos for adults and 100 pesos for children ages 2 to 10. If you ask us, it's a small price to pay for an incredible experience in some of the cleanest water in the world.
You can use a credit card, but poor mobile signal may affect whether the card terminal works. Prepare cash just in case. I used the card on my last visit and had no problems.
Life jackets are available for an additional fee. The water is quite shallow but can move quickly, so it's a good idea to bring a life jacket just in case.
Activities in Los Rapidos at Bacalar Lagoon
There is a lot more to do here than swimming or walking. Take to the water in your kayak and paddle downstream, gliding down the crystal clear surface. Kayaking costs $200-400 pesos per hour. There are also hammocks that hang directly from the trees into the water, allowing you to float just a few inches above the water and relax while watching others frolic.
Be sure to bring snorkeling gear if you want to get a glimpse of underwater life. The water is clear and shallow, making it a perfect place for snorkeling.
If you are spending a few days in Bacalar or are visiting Los Rapidos for just one day, the Bacalar match tour is a must after tour. You could spend a whole day here or just an hour. It depends on how much time you have.
Where is Daegu Ross Rapids?
Bacalar Rapids is a narrow channel towards the southern end of the lagoon, about a 15-minute drive from the city of Bacalar. You can also ride a bicycle (13 km). Be careful as some dust may accumulate on the road. Alternatively, if you are coming from Chetumal, the drive will take approximately 1 hour.
You can easily take a taxi from Bacalar to Los Rapidos. The road is gravel, but it's perfectly fine for a regular cheap rental car. Naturally, avoid potholes and go slow.
Amenities in Los Rapidos
The hotel has a rustic outdoor restaurant. Located right next to the water, the large grassy seating area is so close to the water that you can enjoy Caribbean-style food as well as traditional Mexican fare like ceviche and tacos while watching swimmers float by. Top it off with an ice-cold Mexican beer or fresh coconut milk.
The restaurant has bathrooms and showers. Please be careful as there are no lockers here. If you are a group tourist or rented a vehicle, the safest option is to leave your luggage in the vehicle. Parking lot attendants will watch your vehicle and assist you in parking.
