“Lieutenant Colonel Hal Moore said he was reflecting by asking himself three questions. “What is happening? What's not happening? How can we influence behavior?” Moore’s actions captured the essence of strategic leadership. Moore looked at his surroundings, considered the situation, and decided on the best route. The future was to win battles simply by blocking each attack. The genius of Moore's approach lies in his second question. By reflecting on what didn't happen, he opened his mind to a broader opportunity to see the full range of his options. He could better predict what might or might not happen next and plan his moves in his best interests. When you ask, can it influence your behavior?” He was thus able to envisage a much wider range of reactions than had been possible simply in terms of action and reaction.”

A ship driven by simple muscles is no match for a ship driven by the wind. A ship propelled by the wind flows in harmony with the forces of nature. An organization driven forward by formal authority is like a rowboat. “He who moves with transcendent purpose is like a sailing ship whose sails follow the wind.”
