Leadership is an important skill essential in the workplace. Every team needs someone to inspire and motivate others to achieve a common goal. Attracting professionals with proven skills and raw talent ready to develop and leverage can be difficult. It's time to get a little creative with your approach to find the needle in the haystack, so to speak.
First, does the recruiter have a list of comparable companies they can cite as sources? This may be a good start, but you should also keep tabs on startups and sole proprietors for possible discoveries. We've found that small companies assign exponentially more tasks to their leaders, so the next hire may know more than they need to and emerge as a leader within the organization.
Which companies are laying off their professionals? Is there a company in your industry that had a difficult quarter or lost a key customer? These are all opportunities to connect with great candidates who are starting to reevaluate their future within the company.
Another potentially advantageous angle is when there is a leadership shakeup in the company. When a manager, department head, or executive leaves your company, it can create some uncertainty within your organization, especially within your immediate team. It's worth having a conversation or keeping the lines of communication open.
Being open and sharing information in an informal and friendly way lets future candidates know that they can contact you confidentially. It's never a bad thing to be chosen by a great candidate. When hiring leadership talent, it's important to play the long game.
We often steer us toward other candidates because they trust us. The best headhunters are forensic detectives. They scrutinize resumes and look for commonalities. If you pay attention, you can find opportunities to get involved. I'll cover more about this in my next blog post.
Remember that the best candidates are not always obvious. You need to look beyond the title, degree, and company to what they actually do and the characteristics they possess. Some candidates are looking for their next challenge. Is your organization prepared for this?
