Las Vegas (TCD) — Police recently arrested a 51-year-old man on suspicion of killing his ex-girlfriend's father (69) during an argument over a dog last year.
According to a press release from the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, on June 11, 2023, shortly after 5 p.m., officers responded to the 3900 block of Maryland Avenue and found Larry Vargas unresponsive outside a home. He was taken to Sunrise Hospital, where he died.
Police allege Vargas got into a fight with Roman Ramirez over a pet. According to an arrest report reviewed by KSNV-TV, Ramirez initially went to the house to pick up a dog he shared with his ex-girlfriend when he pushed Vargas several times. Vargas reportedly fell to the ground and fell into a palm tree. As a result, he suffered several abrasions.
Officers located Ramirez later that day and arrested him, according to police. In an interview, Ramirez said he pushed the victim because Vargas had hit him.
When police told Ramirez that Vargas was dead and showed him video evidence that contradicted his statement, he said, “Then charge me with murder and take me to the county.” [Detention Center]”, KSNV reported.
Police were awaiting the results of the Clark County coroner's investigation and detained Ramirez in the Clark County Detention Center, accusing him of causing substantial bodily harm to the elderly man.
On February 8, the Clark County Coroner's Office ruled Vargas' death a homicide, according to police. Vargas reportedly died of cardiac arrhythmia during the conflict.
On February 22, police found Ramirez out on bail and booked him back in the Clark County Detention Center on an open murder charge. He is being held without bail.
