CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. (TCD) — Police have located and arrested a man wanted in connection with the murder of a wrestling teammate at a Christian college last weekend.
At approximately 12:43 a.m. on Saturday, February 24, the Campbellsville Police Department responded to the Campbellsville University campus after receiving a report of an unresponsive male. The victim, later identified by police as 18-year-old Josiah Kilman, was found in his dorm room, according to a statement from the university.
Kilman was transported to Taylor Regional Hospital, where he died. The victim was strangled to death, LEX-TV reported.
Police obtained an arrest warrant for Charles Escalera, 21, in connection with Kilman's death.
According to the Associated Press, both Escalera and Kilman were wrestlers at private colleges.
At approximately 5:15 p.m., Greene County Sheriff's Office and Kentucky State Police responded to a report of a “suspicious male inside a barn” and located Escalera, police said in an updated release. Kentucky State Police took Escalera into custody without incident, and he remains in custody at the Taylor County Detention Center on charges of murder and second-degree theft.
Campbellsville University President Dr. Joseph Hopkins said in a statement: “Campbellsville University is saddened by the loss of a member of our family. We have lost a student and are heartbroken. Our students and their continued safety and those of our community are our primary concern during this devastating time. .”
The campus lockdown was lifted after Escalera's arrest.
