Military aide fees criticized by anti-monarchists
Anti-monarchists have criticized £500,000 spent on royal military aides last year, following a Freedom of Information (FoI) request.
Republic chief executive Graham Smith described the use of aides, known as equerries, drawn from the military, as “a disgraceful use of highly trained soldiers”.
In response to the Republic's FoI request, the Ministry of Defense said the “vast majority” of the costs would have been incurred wherever the soldiers were deployed.
Mr Smith said: “This is a shameful use of highly trained soldiers as window dressing for the King.” I urge the military and government to stop this practice immediately.
“We often hear that we have too many troops and not enough manpower. “How can the government justify spending the national defense budget to open the door for Charles, Camilla and William with further commitments to Ukraine?”
Equerries are an integral part of the senior royal offices, with aides assisting the King, Queen, Prince and Princess of Wales in organizing their diaries and accompanying them on official visits and international travel.
Some of his aides rose to prominence after serving the royal family, including Lord Soames, who served as Charles' courtier in the early 1970s and went on to become a close friend of the king, serving as an MP for more than 30 years.
In response to a FoI request, the MoD said it had spent £506,681 on Equiriery in 2023.
“…it may be helpful to note that most costs arise from fixed staffing costs, which continue to be incurred by the Department of Defense regardless of where the employee is employed.”
Buckingham Palace and Kensington Palace have been contacted for comment.
