Richard Osman estimated that Prince Harry earned $27 million from writing Spare.
On his podcast The Rest Is Entertainment, host and best-selling author Richard Osman said “money is flowing in for the Sussexes” following the release of Prince Harry's memoir, Spare.
He said: “It is impossible to overestimate how much money Harry has made from his books.
“I mean, this is one of the most successful books. The fastest-selling nonfiction book of all time.
“I did some envelope counting because I wanted to. I know how much I get paid per book. I received an advance payment of 200,000 won. If you get paid $20 million up front, you don't make a penny until the publisher gets that $20 million back.
“And then they get their $20 million back and there’s all kinds of sliding scales of how it works, what they get, what they get. Once you make $20 million, you get royalties.
“I think – and his book hasn’t come out in paperback yet. So this book is purely a hardcover. I think he made $26 million, $27 million. So he earned $20 million in advances just from the hardcover copy of his first book. Forget about everything else and audiobook rights. He already got it. “Once the book comes out, it’s just money rolling in for the Sussexes.”
