Appearing on the ABC talk show “The View” on Wednesday morning, Vice President Kamala Harris admitted to her progressive co-host Joy Behar that she is “really scared” of former President Donald Trump ahead of this year's presidential election.
Harris said: 'I'm really scared'
At one point in the interview, Behar asked Harris about her concerns about the state of Joe Biden's presidential campaign.
“President Obama has reportedly said that he thinks the Biden campaign is too complacent about Trump,” she began. “Representative Jim Clyburn said the campaign is not breaking through the MAGA wall. “Michelle Obama, like the rest of us, is scared about the potential consequences of her election, she said.”
“Are you scared now?” Behar asked. “What could happen if Trump becomes president again? So what are you going to do to stop this madness?”
“I’m so scared!” Harris responded bluntly. “That’s why I’m traveling to our country.”
“You know, there’s an old saying that there are only two ways to run for office. They are either unmatched or scared,” she continued. “So for all of that, yes, we should all be scared.”

'We need to get re-elected'
Harris continued to bring the interview back to women and children's issues.
“But as we know, this is clearly a table comprised of very powerful women,” she said. “We don’t run away from something when we’re scared. We fight against it. right. huh. Do many of us lie in bed with the blanket over our heads when we fear for our children's future? no. No, you can't. We can't. We can't. And that is where this election clearly demands that President Biden and I, and all of us who are part of this administration, win re-election.”
“There is no question,” she concluded. “We have to be on the road. Listen, in the last two weeks I've been to Georgia, Nevada, North Carolina, and South Carolina twice. I'm planning to go on a trip for the first two weeks of this year. We have to get re-elected and we have to communicate what we have achieved, and this will be one of our big challenges. We've done a lot of good work. We need to let people know who brought it.”

Harris' unpopularity 'could end up being the difference maker'
According to an analysis by polling website 538, Harris is “scared as hell” because her approval rating has fallen from 41.7% to 36.3% last year, while her disapproval rating has increased from 51.7% to 53.7%. Thomas Gift, director of the Center on US Politics at University College London, told Newsweek last month that Harris's unpopularity “will ultimately be what makes the difference” in the 2024 presidential election. “It can be done,” he said.
“To realize how unpopular Kamala Harris is, you have to keep in mind the historical significance of it all,” Gift said. “Not since Dan Quayle has anyone in her position had a favorability rating this low during her first term. That's saying something. So it's no surprise that Republicans, especially at Biden's age, continue to emphasize simple points. A vote for Biden is a vote for Harris.
“It’s usually the top of the ticket that drives the vote, and that will be true again in 2024, but Harris’ extreme popularity will impact the margins,” he added. “And with elections looming next year, those margins could end up being what makes the difference.”
