At least five people were killed in a missile attack on a building in Damascus, Iranian English-language state media outlet Press TV reported on Saturday evening.
Iran's semi-official Tasnim news agency, citing the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), said Saturday that this follows reports that four Iranian military advisers and several Syrian soldiers were killed in an Israeli missile attack.
Syrian state TV, which blamed Israel for the attack, earlier said Saturday's missile attack killed and injured several people in the Majeh region, home to several diplomatic missions, including the Iranian embassy.
The IRGC named the four soldiers as Hojatollah Omidvar, Ali Aghazadeh, Hossein Mohammadi and Saeed Karimi.
“The Supreme Leader and Commander-in-Chief expressed condolences and congratulations to the families of the great martyrs and the fighters and commanders of the Islamic Resistance Front,” Iran's semi-official Tasnim news agency reported, citing the IRGC.
Syrian civil defense teams were searching for people believed to be trapped in the rubble, and airstrikes also damaged nearby buildings and a number of nearby vehicles, state TV reported.
The Israel Defense Forces declined to comment on the strike, telling CNN: “We do not comment on foreign reports.”
Tensions rise: The reported strike comes as fears continue to grow of escalating conflict in the Middle East.
Syria, along with northern Iraq, was the target of a ballistic missile attack Monday from what Iran's Revolutionary Guard said was an “anti-Iran terrorist group.”
On Friday, the United States reportedly carried out its sixth airstrike against Iran-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen.
