DuPage County, Illinois (TCD) — A judge found a 69-year-old man suffering from mental illness guilty of stabbing his 93-year-old mother to death in the kitchen of their apartment complex in 2019.
DuPage County State's Attorney Robert Berlin announced April 12 that Edward Mitzelfeld was sentenced following a week-long bench trial that ended March 22. Mitzelfeld was initially charged with five counts of first-degree murder for killing his 93-year-old mother. Francis Kelly, May 31, 2019. Mitchell Felt has never posted $5 million bail, and he has remained in custody since his arrest.
According to the State Attorney's Office, on May 29, 2019, shortly after 5:20 p.m., Bartlett Police Department officers responded to Mitchellfeldt and Kelly's home and found him “in the front yard of the home with his hands up.” Police entered the residence and found Kelly's body covered in blood on the kitchen floor.
Investigators determined Mitchellfeld attacked Kelly with a kitchen knife and stabbed her multiple times in the back. The State Attorney's Office said the knife “severed her aorta and entered her lung.” Mitzelfeld called 911 after the incident.
“This is a tragic incident that has taken a huge toll on both Francis and Edward’s families,” Berlin said.
Mitchellfeld will be sentenced at a later date.
Kelly, a great-grandmother, was remembered as “an avid card and cribbage player,” according to her obituary.
