A husband has sparked controversy after admitting his wife thought the baby name he chose was “horrible”.
In a recent post shared on Reddit, a woman asked social media users for help. Because her baby's name that her partner was “obsessed with” was one she didn't like. She shared more details about the name Mips and how her husband has always liked the name.
“My husband was obsessed with this name even before we had children, and no matter what I said, he wouldn’t let go,” she said.
She then mentioned why she felt differently about the name, despite her husband's positive outlook.
“I feel like the name basically paints a target on kids’ backs and no one will take them seriously.” She added: “My husband thinks it’s a cute name and is going to start a naming trend.”
The woman added that along with the name Mips, her husband was also “choosing a Mipsie.” After stressing that her partner was “serious” about the name, she explained that she posted it on her Reddit page because she wanted to convince him that it was a “terrible” name.
Her post quickly went viral, receiving over 18,000 likes. In the comments, several people criticized her husband's choice of baby name, with many claiming it was not appropriate for a child or adult.
“Even if he likes it, naming a baby is a double 'yes' or 'no' situation. Thank goodness for you.” one person wrote, while another joked: “If he wants to name something 'Mipsy', give him a cat. Mips seems like a really cute animal name!”
“No. It’s the perfect name for a cat, a rabbit, or a ridiculously furry dog.” A third person wrote: “Little, furry names. Not grown-up girls. I swear people forget that babies will grow up one day and have to live with ridiculous names that their parents thought were adorable embroidered on their diaper bags.”
Others criticized the woman's husband, with some even suggesting she should end her marriage and “stop” her partner from giving her baby naming ideas.
In an edited post, she hit back at some of the criticism, saying she wouldn't be leaving her “loving husband” over the situation. She also said that she and her husband both have a list of baby names they like, but Mips is the only name on the list that she doesn't like.
“It was really the only thing I had to say no to. He insists it would be a good name for the child, but luckily he has more options open to him,” she added.
She shared a message from her husband, who admitted that “Mip/Mipsie” was a bad name. He also noted that after he and his wife had a playful argument about the name — he said it was a “reference to Super Mario 64” — they both ultimately decided that “it was always going to be that name.” [their] “Little one, something ordinary.”
This isn't the first time the debate over baby names has gone viral. In a post shared on Reddit's “Am I an Asshole” forum in March, a woman was praised for disparaging her husband's baby girl's name, “Stuerta.” This name was inspired by Stuart Jr., because when a woman gave birth to a boy, she named him after her husband.
“It seems, [my husband’s] The logic is that since Stewart ends in a 't,' you can make it feminine by just adding an 'a,'” she admitted. “I tried to explain why that didn't work, because it sounded more like a furniture brand than a person's name, and I kept correcting people and explaining its origins.”
She began suggesting alternative names that had the same “sound or meaning” as “Stuart.” Her husband was not interested in such name choices, but she still said she would not name her child “Stuarta.”
“Now I love my husband very much, and I understand his desire to honor his family. But I can't imagine our daughter receiving awkward stares and endless questions about her own 'unusual' name for the rest of her life. I also worry about her potential bullying and the impact it could have on her self-esteem,” she explained.
