Family is one of the most important things in most people’s lives, regardless of culture or geography. However, the idea that family can motivate people at work has been overlooked. Instead, in the past, family was primarily seen as competing with work for limited resources, such as employees’ time and energy. Many studies on work-family conflict have built on this concept, showing how the work and family domains create conflicting demands and interfere with each other. However, there is a growing body of research that suggests that family can play a role in motivating people at work, thereby increasing their performance and inspiring them to do their best. This article focuses on this research and discusses how organizations that embrace family at work can benefit in attracting and retaining highly motivated and engaged employees.
