Houston (TCD) — A 25-year-old man who dumped his girlfriend's daughter's body into a storm drain was sentenced to 40 years in prison.
The Harris County District Attorney's Office announced on February 28 that Travion Thompson pleaded guilty to causing serious bodily injury to a child and was sentenced to 40 years in prison in return for the death of 2-year-old Maliyah Bass. It was announced that he had been sentenced. Thompson's girlfriend, Sahara Ervin, was sentenced Friday to 20 years in prison for tampering with evidence, according to Harris County court records.
On the morning of August 22, 2020, Houston Police Department officers responded to Beechnut Street after receiving a call about a missing 2-year-old child. Ervin told police he was cooking when Bass disappeared from the playground outside his apartment. Police issued an amber alert after a search of the area failed.
The next day, a woman riding in southeast Houston found Bass' body in a swamp. The girl was pronounced dead at the scene, she said.
Erin and Thompson were arrested in October 2020 and charged with causing serious bodily injury to a child and tampering with evidence.
Charging documents against Ervin alleged she beat Bass with a blunt object and left him naked “in a cold closet overnight.” Her charges also say she failed to provide medical care to her daughter.
“It is unclear what exactly happened to the baby, but Thompson admitted to dumping her body in a storm drain leading to the swamp where she was found,” the district attorney's office said.
Thompson will reportedly be eligible for parole in 20 years.
