Apple is rapidly moving forward with its plans for the next generation of Apple Silicon. According to a new report this week, the first M4 Macs are expected to launch as early as the end of this year. Here's what to expect:
M4 Mac: What we know so far
In the latest edition of the Power On newsletter, Bloomberg's Mark Gurman provided some additional details about Apple's plans for the M4 Mac transition. According to Gurman, the first upgrades are expected to arrive later this year, starting with the 24-inch iMac and entry-level MacBook Pro.
Here's the full timeline, as Gurman explains: This may change depending on supply, production and other factors.
- The low-cost 14-inch MacBook Pro with M4 will be released around the end of 2024.
- A 24-inch iMac equipped with the M4 is also expected to be released around the end of the year.
- The new 14-inch and 16-inch high-end MacBook Pros with the M4 Pro/Max chips are expected to be released between late 2024 and early 2025.
- The Mac mini in M4 and M4 Pro configurations will be released between late 2024 and early 2025.
- The new 13-inch and 15-inch MacBook Air are expected to be released around spring 2025.
- Mac Studio with advanced M4 chip will be released in mid-2025.
- Mac Pro with the M4 Ultra chip is scheduled to be released in the second half of 2025.
We don't yet know the technical details of what the M4 processor family will offer. Bloomberg reports that Apple will focus on artificial intelligence, but we don't yet know what that will look like in practice. Apple plans to heavily roll out new AI features as part of its next software updates, including iOS 18 and macOS 15.
