I arrive early for my Sunday morning yoga class to claim my favorite space in the heated room. Since the farmers market is held outside the studio, parking is limited. I returned to the space and found a family of four standing next to the car adjusting their clothes as if they were posing for a photo.
As I walk quickly to the elevator, I mentally prepare for the difficult times that await me. The door opens. I see my family walking towards me and I press the hold button.
My father says thank you. He is wearing traditional Nigerian clothing, as is his wife. My two daughters, ages 6 and 8, wear chiffon dresses with sequins and ruffles. Lacey ankle socks and sparkly Mary Jane socks complete the fit. Both girls wear high ponytails with dozens of tight braids that reach down to their waists.
They get so excited and giggle when they see their reflection in the elevator mirror. I made eye contact with the younger of the two, and we smiled at each other. She turned and came towards me, and I looked up at her, standing close and smiling brightly. Suddenly her arms wrapped around my waist and squeezed me tightly. Her younger sister joined her. Now four little arms are holding me. please hear me Their smiles and energy are contagious. Despite the lump forming in my throat, I can whisper to them how sweet and special they are.
The elevator doors open and the hug loosens. The girls skipped. I look at my mom. She asks me to buy her snacks from the market.
We are on our way to church, she told me to have a good day. She is very polite.
I sit cross-legged in the studio and meditate. I want to see and feel the inner brightness that one experiences when one reaches transcendence. I barely closed my eyes and the light was already waiting for me, blinding me with energy and peace.
I realized I had been touched by angels.
moment of lightness
Go, go, go. That's my day, from start to finish. Sometimes I go while I sleep. Putting off mindfulness during a busy day is non-negotiable. A quick walk around the neighborhood, no cell phone, no earphones. Eat slowly, away from your desk. And try yoga every day at home or in your studio. The more mindful you become, the lighter you feel. What's the secret? Being there to notice it.
