Following two recent votes by policymakers, introductory sociology courses will no longer count toward general education credit at Florida institutions of higher learning.
The Florida Board of Regents, which sets academic standards for the state's university system, has decided to remove 'Principles of Sociology' from the general education curriculum. They also voted to prohibit universities from spending money on “diversity, equity and inclusion” programs under state law.
The board voted Wednesday to remove the class from the general education curriculum list and instead add a survey class in American history.
The vote, which applies to the state's college system, follows a similar decision by the state Board of Education last week. The BOE's Jan. 17 vote applies to the state's colleges and universities, including two-year community colleges.
The American Sociological Association opposed this decision.
“We do not dispute that studying the Constitution and other fundamental documents of government is critically important, but we argue that such knowledge is insufficient for anyone to engage fully civically,” the group wrote in public comments. “Sociological knowledge and understanding are important components of civic literacy.”
Florida Education Commissioner Manny Diaz pushed for changes to focus on civic literacy.
The sociology group did not respond to two questions. college fix I asked for comment via email on whether it promotes a particular ideology and what deleting it as a created class would mean for enrollment.
The board also did not respond to a similar request for comment prior to the vote.
Professor Douglas Kincaid, Chair of Global and Sociocultural Studies at Florida International University, said: Fixes With joint letter from university sociology and related program chairs.
The letter states that sociology students should focus on “aging and the life cycle; communications and information technology; Consumers and Consumption; crime; international migration; Organizations, occupations and tasks; politics; Science, Knowledge and Technology; the social dimension of law; and the social dimension of medicine.”
“We recognize that removing Introduction to Sociology from the core curriculum does not mean that the course cannot be taught. We will continue to provide it,” the letter states. “But significantly reducing the number of subjects we offer will inevitably result in far fewer students benefiting from a social studies education and impoverish the general education curriculum as a whole.”
Professors also warned of loss of faculty retention and research funding.
But at least one sociologist supports the change.
Alexander Riley, a professor of sociology at Bucknell University in Pennsylvania, said sociology has become “a workshop for the professional left.”
Riley pointed out. Fixes on a recent essay he wrote when asked for comment.
“The fact is that much of what is presented as sociological knowledge to college students in Florida and everywhere else today is direct political propaganda from the far left,” he wrote. american heart, responding to the ASA letter. “In recent decades, this discipline has developed into little more than an academic cover for spreading radical ideologies.”
He noted that the sociology group's 2024 conference focuses on political topics around 'race' and 'social justice'. The group also posts pro-LGBT and pro-racial identity videos on the site.
The group is “generally indistinguishable from political activist movements such as Black Lives Matter, Women’s March, and MoveOn.”
“Sociology 2023 aims to turn students into fierce social justice warriors,” he wrote last December. “It’s really simple.”
