A collection of new works by artist Nicole Duennebier (previously featured here). Born in Connecticut, Duennebier received a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Maine College of Art. Her BFA thesis was influenced by her research on coastal ecosystems in Maine. Her work continues to be inspired by marine life, often combining the darkness and complexity of the undersea region with the aesthetics of 16th-century Dutch still life painting.
In “Faint of Heart,” Duennebier explores personal stories and deep emotional spaces that connect themes of fear and the ever-changing ambiguity of the natural world. Blurring the line between observation and decoration, Duennebier's paintings are both dreamy and scary, familiar and surreal. Arches and openings are repeated throughout, making it look attractive and slightly ominous. Because it's not always clear what you'll find once you get through it.
