There is a group called “Woke Kindergarten” that, like many other (but less colorfully named) organizations, receives money to “train” school teachers on the evils of white supremacy, racism, oppression, and more.
Glassbrook Elementary School near San Francisco reportedly received $250,000 in federal funding for Woke Kindergarten to “improve student achievement.”
But after two years, the student's test score went down According to San Francisco Chronicle: “Less than 4% of students are proficient in math and less than 12% of students are proficient in English at grade level.”
According to its website, Woke Kindergarten “supports.[s] “We are a children, family, educator, and organization dedicated to abolitionist early education, pro-Black, queer, and trans liberation.”
Hayward Unified School District defended its $250,000 spending, saying Woke Kindergarten “did what it was hired to do,” but cited things like “improved attendance” and reduced suspension rates.
The district also claimed the group's efforts resulted in the school being removed from the state's “watch list.” chronology It was necessary to inform Hayward that not only was this not true, but that Glassbrook had in fact “slipped to a lower level.”
Programs like Woke Kindergarten are based on “the belief that some things cannot be reformed, adjusted, or changed because they are inherently problematic or oppressive,” said Zeus Leonardo, a UC Berkeley professor.
“The idea is not to indoctrinate or impose politics, but to make politics part of the educational framework,” Leonardo said.
more: The district's teaching of English as a second language focuses on oppression.
(In 2007, Leonardo told an audience that “to abolish whiteness is to abolish whiteness.”) He said this was “perhaps very uncomfortable, but it also questions our definition of what race is and what racial justice might mean.” “It’s a question,” he said. He said people are “born humans” but “have to be abused little by little to become white humans. Sometimes this abuse is physical, like being bullied for being white.”)
Tiger Craven-Neeley, a teacher at Glassbrook, is a white “moderate homosexual” and pointed out his issues with Woke Kindergarten:
He said he was told the main goal was to 'disrupt whiteness' in schools and that the sessions were 'not a place to express white guilt'. He said he inquired about lectures offered on the organization's website that offered “little camaraderie” with trainers who used the phrase “so-called America” or assumed a world without police, money and landlords.
Craven-Neely […] When asked to explain what stands in the way of whiteness, he said he didn't find it difficult. “What does that mean?” He added that such questions resulted in him being banned, at least temporarily, from future training sessions. “I just want to know: What does that mean for a third-grade classroom?” …
Woke Kindergarten “did a lot of good things. I think we need to address the issue of race. “Children need to know if they are being discriminated against,” he said. “But as a Hayward Unified teacher, I don’t have to jump on the bandwagon that defunds the police or insults our country.”
Another teacher said, “It slowly became clear that if you were a dissenting voice, that wasn’t what they wanted to hear.”
Woke Kindergarten was founded in 2020 by Akiea “Ki” Gross, a so-called “abolitionist early childhood educator, cultural organizer, and founder who is currently revolutionizing ways to resist, heal, liberate, and create through pedagogy.”
“I believe Israel has no right to exist,” Gross recently posted on Instagram. I believe America has no right to exist. “I believe that any settler colony that commits genocide against indigenous people has no right to exist.”

Hayward Superintendent Jason Reimann said Woke Kindergarten was not hired for “political purposes” or to “improve literacy and math scores.” He repeated his “work on restoration practices.” [and] It helps eliminate suspensions and expulsions from the classroom.”
