Construction is officially complete on Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point, Disney Cruise Line's newest destination in the Bahamas.
Lookout Cay is located on the southern tip of Eleuthera Island, east of Nassau and south of Castaway Cay, another of Disney's private Bahamas destinations.
Disney executives, cast members, community members and Bahamian officials gathered together on Lookout Cay in front of the brightly colored Junkanoo-inspired Goombay Cultural Center on Thursday to celebrate the completion of the project. The event included remarks from the Line's leadership team: Prime Minister Philip Davis, Deputy Prime Minister/Minister of Tourism Chester Cooper and Minister of Labor and Member of Parliament for Central and Southern Eleuthera Clay Sweeting.
“We are excited to celebrate with the Bahamian community the opening of Disney Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point,” said Sharon Siskie, Executive Vice President and General Manager, Disney Cruise Line. “Creating a second island in the Bahamas was an incredible collaboration,” she said. We are very proud of the relationships we have built here in our community and the unique stories we tell together. We look forward to welcoming our first guests to the islands where they can experience the spirit of the Bahamas with a special touch of Disney magic.”
Guests also enjoyed performances by local Junkanoos groups, featuring this year's Junior Junkanoo competition winners from Tarpum Bay Primary and Preston H. Albury High School in Eleuthera.
The new development has created hundreds of construction-related roles for Bahamians, more than three times the number of jobs promised by Disney before the project began. This will launch with a Bahamian-wide leadership team and has created nearly 200 high-quality roles for Bahamians.
‘The collaboration between Disney and the Bahamian creative community has created a truly unique cultural experience in South Eleuthera,’ said renowned Bahamian artist Antonius Roberts. ‘Visitors and locals alike will be enlightened and entertained by the powerful stories shared by local musicians, artisans and storytellers. “I am proud to have helped bring this vision to life, and I believe Disney’s efforts to promote cultural understanding and appreciation will have a lasting impact on everyone who visits Disney Lookout Cay.”
To celebrate the opening of Lookout Cay, Disney is investing $1 million to support youth programs, school playground improvements, and community sports spaces, as well as other ongoing initiatives to support community needs. This investment also includes support from the Disney Conservation Fund for youth education focused on conservation in central and southern Eleuthera.
